Hurricane Oscar has been wreaking havoc in the Caribbean region, impacting both the Bahamas and now eastern Cuba. The United States National Hurricane Center has confirmed that the storm made landfall in eastern Cuba, where residents are already grappling with a significant power disruption. Earlier on Sunday, Hurricane Oscar had struck the southeastern Bahamas before moving on to Cuba, leaving destruction in its wake.

The center of the storm reached the Cuban province of Guantanamo, near the city of Baracoa, late on Sunday evening. With maximum sustained winds of around 80 mph (130 kph), the impact of the hurricane on the region is expected to be severe. Residents in eastern Cuba are bracing themselves for the worst as the storm continues its path across the island.

Forecasters predict that Hurricane Oscar will move through eastern Cuba throughout Sunday night and into Monday. The region is expected to receive between 6 to 12 inches (15.2 to 30.5 centimeters) of rainfall through early Wednesday, with certain isolated areas possibly experiencing up to 18 inches (45.72 centimeters) of precipitation. This heavy rainfall could lead to dangerous flooding and landslides in the region.

The National Hurricane Center has also issued warnings about potential storm surges along Cuba’s north shore, with surges of up to 3 feet (0.91 meters) expected in some areas. These surges could further exacerbate the flooding and destruction caused by the hurricane.

Despite the initial impact on eastern Cuba, forecasters believe that Hurricane Oscar will weaken as it moves across the island before eventually turning northeast and heading towards the central Bahamas by Tuesday. The storm’s center was last located approximately 5 miles (10 kilometers) east-southeast of Baracoa or 50 miles (80 kilometers) east-northeast of Guantanamo. Moving at a speed of 7 mph (11 kph) in a west-southwest direction, the storm is expected to gradually diminish in strength as it continues on its path.

The people of eastern Cuba are now facing the daunting task of preparing for the aftermath of Hurricane Oscar. With the potential for extensive damage from strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges, residents are urged to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Emergency response teams are on standby to provide assistance to those affected by the storm and help with recovery efforts.

As Hurricane Oscar continues its journey through the Caribbean region, authorities are closely monitoring its path and issuing updates to keep residents informed and prepared. The resilience and strength of the people in the affected areas will be tested as they work together to overcome the challenges posed by this powerful storm.
